Steven Harkness, age 66, of Hays passed away Friday, September 25, 2015 in Hays. He was born June 17, 1949 in Ransom, Kansas to Vance and Lois (Wyrill) Harkness.

He was a self-employed artist by trade.

He is survived by two daughters, Michelle Harkness, Kansas City, MO and  Amanda Harkness, Hays, KS; a Brother Gary Harkness, and wife Linda Harkness, Larned, KS and a sister Jane Spiess, and husband Jim Spiess, Wichita KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Saturday, October 3, 2015 at the Ransom United Methodist Church in Ransom, KS. with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 1 PM until service time at the church.

Eric J. “Rick” Legleiter, 58, Hays, Kansas, formerly of La Crosse, Kansas, died Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at the Hays Good Samaritan Center, Hays, Kansas.

Mr. Legleiter was born December 9, 1956, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Alvin and Delores (Zimmerman) Legleiter. He lived most of his life in La Crosse, Kansas, until recently becoming a resident of Hays, Kansas, moving there from Russell, Kansas. He was a 1976 graduate of Hays High School, Hays, Kansas. While living in La Crosse, he worked for La Crosse Furniture Company.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas; a former member of Knights of Columbus Council #2970, La Crosse, Kansas; and a member of several organizations affiliated with Developmental Services Of Northwest Kansas (DSNWK), Russell, Kansas.

Survivors include: four brothers, Gerard Legleiter (Karen), Sterling, Kansas, Timothy Legleiter, Pratt, Kansas, Florian Legleiter (Dianne), Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Kurt Legleiter (Mary), Paso Robles, California; two sisters, Gerianne Kuntzsch (Carl), Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Mary Jo Tammen (Kent), Hays, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be Friday, October 2, 2015, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Church visitation will be Saturday, October 3, 2015, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Saturday, October 3, 2015, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Father Matthew Kumi officiating. Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to Developmental Services Of Northwest Kansas (DSNWK), Russell, Kansas.

Mary Kay StengerMary Kay Stenger, 70, Topeka, died Friday, September 25, 2015 at her home.

She was born January 5, 1945 the daughter of Paul and Margie (Wolf) Stenger. She was a school psychologist. Prior, she worked in the juvenile justice field and was a pioneer in the studies of linking delinquency and learning disabilities.

Mary Kay retired from Seaman USD 345. She loved her family, her faith, and her friends.

She is survived by her brothers and sisters, Paul Stenger and wife Anne of Arlington, VA, Vicki Willenborg and spouse Karen Hyland of Kansas City, MO, Mike Stenger and Pat Stenger of Topeka, Steve Stenger of Holton, Kansas, David Stenger of Topeka, and Suellyn Stenger of Hays, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Donnie Stenger.

Her body was donated to The University of Kansas Medical Center.

Mary Kay’s life will be celebrated with Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Mater Dei (Holy Name) Church, 1114 SW 10th, Topeka. Interment will be at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.  Memorials are suggested to the Mater Dei parish or to family wishes.

She was born on October 13, 1929 near Redwing, Kansas, the daughter of Julius and Mathilda Boor Klug.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Theresa’s Altar Society, Dighton, Kansas

On February 25, 1957, she married Ben Brenner in Odin, Kansas. They lived north of Bazine for 17 years and lived on the Triple Bar Ranch near Beeler for 40 years.

She is survived by her husband Ben, Ness City, KS; sons, Ronald Brenner, Ness City, KS, Darrell (Barbara) Brenner, Ness City, Gary (Marya) Brenner, Beeler, KS, Douglas Brenner, Oakley, KS, Randall (Kathy) Brenner, Ness City; daughters, Rhonda (Glenn) Stramel, Munjor, KS, Carolyn (Claude) Durler, Dodge City, KS, Diane (Cedric) Drewes, Dodge City; brothers, Leon (Lois) Klug, Hoisington, KS, James Klug, Odin, KS; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Alois “Lou” Klug; sister, Eleanor Reif, and infant grandson, Brian Stramel.

Viewing will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Sunday, October 4, 2015, 10:00 A.M. – 9:00 P.M. and Monday, October 5, 9:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.

Parish Vigil will be at Sacred Heart Church, Ness City, Monday, October, 5, 6:30 P.M.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, October 6, 2015, 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church, Ness City.

Pauline Dinkel- PictureVictoria, Kansas – Pauline (Karlin) Dinkel, age 93, died Saturday, October 3, 2015, at Via Christi Village Care Center Hays, Kansas.

She was born December 25, 1921, at Catharine, Kansas to Anton A. and Pauline (Grabbe) Karlin.

She married Joseph S. “Joe” Dinkel on September 22, 1941 at Catharine, Kansas.  He died October 7, 1988.
She was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Daughters of Isabella, Christian Mothers, and Secular Franciscan Order all of Victoria. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, drawing, crafts and her family.

Survivors include four sons, Melvin Dinkel and wife, Clarita, Delmar Dinkel, Jim Dinkel and wife, Peggy, all of Hays, KS; Kenneth Dinkel and wife, Marjorie, Plainville, KS; three daughters, Dorothy Jacobs and husband, Clarence, Donna Deckman and husband, Joe, both of Hays, KS; Lucy Brown and husband, Robert D., Victoria, KS; one daughter-in-law, Jackie Schumacher and husband, Craig, Wichita, KS; 24 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Frank Dinkel; three infant sons, Richard Lee, Joseph Anthony and Thomas Gilbert Dinkel; one infant daughter, Judith Pauline Dinkel; one granddaughter, Tammy Gilliland; two brothers, Edwin Karlin and Gilbert (Lioba) Karlin, three sisters, Helen (Richard) Sander, Fidelia (Herman) Brungardt, Dorothy (Alvin) Herl; one infant brother, Fidelis Karlin and infant twins, Francis and Mary Karlin.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas.
Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery Victoria, Kansas.

Janet was born December 9, 1935 in Russell County, Kansas the daughter of Duke and Helengene Cook Neil. She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1953. She then attended and graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree and went on to become a social worker.

Janet was united in marriage to E. Doug Metz on December 27, 1959 in Russell, Kansas. This union was blessed with four daughters, Kelly, Stacey, Sara and Mary. They made their home in Russell and Topeka, Kansas, St. Louis, Missouri, Middle Town, Ohio, Lakewood, Colorado for 35 years and Wichita, Kansas.

Janet was a devoted wife and homemaker. She worked for Russell County for many years as a Social worker. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, Rainbow Girls, and was active in the Republican Party on the local level. She enjoyed volunteering her time, knitting, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving family include her husband of 55 years, Doug of the home; daughters, Kelly Younger (Dave) of Ulysses, Kansas, Stacey Metz (Dennis) of Seneca, Kansas , Sara Kadowaki (Jay) of San Diego, California , and Mary Mattingly (David) of Wichita, Kansas; brothers, Allan Neil of Derby, Kansas and Bill Neil of Russell, Kansas ; sister, Linda Renberger of Derby, Kansas ; nine grandchildren, Deacon, Kirby, Macy Younger, Lindsay,Alison, Jackson and Mitchell Kadowaki, Wyatt and Stella Mattingly. And many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Gordon Neil.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Russell City Cemetery. Cremation has preceded the service. A Memorial has been established with Rivercross Hospice of Wichita. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Screen Shot 2015-10-04 at 11.09.59 AMKenneth Neil Ellegood, 80, died on October 01, 2015, at his home in rural Osborne county after a long battle with cancer. He was born August 30, 1935, the son of Robert and Alice (Everley) Ellegood at Monument Kansas.

Kenneth graduated from Oakley High School in 1954. He then attended Kansas State University and transferred Fort Hays State University. During this time he served in the Army for two years, 1958-1959. He then returned to Fort Hays State and graduated in 1962 with his Bachelors degree. After graduation he started his career teaching and coaching at Stockton, Kansas. He started the wrestling program there. He then completed his Masters in counseling at Fort Hays State University in May 1969. He then moved on to be a counselor at Abe Hubert Junior High and finished his teaching career at Kenneth Henderson Middle School in Garden City, Kansas. He retired from there in 1994 and moved back to his other love, farming, in Osborne County, Kansas.

His greatest love was working with children. As a counselor and a teacher. He touched many lives. His favorite past time was spending time with all of his children and grand children. Nothing brought more joy than watching all of them participate in the many activities throughout the years. He especially had a passion for wrestling and was regularly seen encouraging all that would listen.

On June 2, 1963, he married Beverly Elaine Winder, she survives. Other survivors include: sons, Tate Ellegood (Barb) of Hays, Kansas, Michael Ellegood (Ginger) of Hutchinson, Kansas, Robbie Ellegood of Ellsworth, Kansas, Myron Ellegood (Sarah) of Great Bend, Kansas; daughter, Lisa Schroeder (Steve) of Russell, Kansas; Honorary son, Steve Winder (Pam), brothers, Keith Ellegood (Lou) of Oakley, Kansas, Ben Ellegood (Donnette) of Oakley Kansas, Wayne Winder (Rogene) of Viola, Kansas. Eleven grandchildren Megan, Brooke, Katie, Kyle, Dodge, Dixie, Cole, Shelby, Cassie, Micah, David.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Robert and Alice Ellegood, and Infant son; Kenton Wayne Ellegood

Celebration of Kenneth’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, October 5, 2015 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. Visitation will be Sunday, October 4, 2015 from Noon to 8:00 PM at the mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 PM Monday at the Oakley Cemetery in Oakley, Kansas. Condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

He was a farmer and stockman who loved to hunt, tell jokes, and BS.

On August 5, 1978, he married Mary Beth Young. She preceded him in death on March 11, 2003.

He is survived by his special friend and companion, Jean Solze; step-son, John; step-daughter, Melissa; brothers, Walter (Judy) Pfaff, Miland, CA, Leon (Pat) Pfaff, Brownell, KS, Roy (Kay) Pfaff, McCracken, KS, Ralph Pfaff, Hutchinson, KS, Bennie (Cindy) Boley, Myra, TX; sisters, Lucille Young, Ness City, KS, Betty Miller, Ellinwood, KS, Eileen (Larry) Backstrom, Great Bend, KS, Laura (Duane) Morgan, Wakeeney, KS, Rebecca (Doran) Kinyon, Holcomb, KS; step-grandchildren, Zachary, Marissa, Amanda, Brett, Selena; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born July 9, 1930, in Ellis, Kansas, to Sylvester and Barbara (Aschenbrenner) Bieker. He married Luella (Herrman) on April 25, 1950, in Hays, Kansas.

He worked 36 years at Heartland Building Center in Hays, as an estimate manager and sales clerk. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Joseph Knights of Columbus Council both of Hays, Kansas. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working in his yard and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Luella Bieker, of the home; two sons, Thomas Bieker and wife, Dina, Battlefield, MO; Brian Bieker and wife, April, Dayton, OH; one daughter, Claudia Rader and husband, Ronald, Topeka, KS; one brother, Frank Bieker and wife, Nadine, Salina, KS; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Albert, Martin and John Bieker.

Services are at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, October 8, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church Hays, Kansas. Inurnment at St. Joseph Cemetery Hays, Kansas.

He was born November 24, 1957, in Hays, Kansas, to Alvin “Al” and Christine (Rupp) Billinger. He graduated from TMP-Marian in 1977.

He was a Behavioral Health Tech in the Department of Psychiatry at Maricopa Integrated Health Systems retiring in 2013. He was also a past member of the National Guard.

He is survived by two two sons, Aaron Billinger and Douglas Billinger Jr both of Chandler, AZ; a grandson, Thor Billinger of Chandler; his mother, Christine Billinger of Via Christi Village, Hays; three brothers, Alan Billinger and wife Carrie of Hays, Steve Billinger of Casper, WY and Greg Billinger and wife Jolene of Bakersfield, CA; a sister, Roxie VonLintel and husband Hank of Victoria, KS.

He was preceded in death by his Father, Alvin “Al” Billinger April 1, 2002.

Cremation has been chosen and private family services will be at a later date

5612a6cbee70eWendell W. Warner Sr., of Hays, died Friday October 2nd, 2015. He was born March 7th, 1939 in Saint Francis, Kansas to Wilbur and Mildred Warner.

Wendell was a graduate of Saint Francis High School. He worked for Southwestern Bell/ AT&T for over 37 years and was a Retired Staff Sergeant in the United States Army after serving for 21 years as a Reservist. Wendell loved everything the outdoors had to offer. He was an avid fly fisherman who tied his own flies and handcrafted the poles not only for himself, but also for his grandchildren. Wendell enjoyed hunting with both his bow and rifle. He was a member of the Trap and Gun Powder Clubs in Hays. Wendell enjoyed “tinkering” in his garage and spent countless hours on his scrimshaw, leather, and woodwork.

Survivors include Wendell’s loving wife of 31 years Patricia Brungardt Warner and his two children Venus Warner and her partner Jan Felker, and Huston Warner and his wife Lisa, of Colorado. Wendell is also survived by Patricia’s 3 children whom he loved dearly, Beth Komarek and her husband Shane of Salina, Phil Brungardt, and his wife Gwen of Kansas City, and Amy Otto and her husband Charles of Atlanta. Wendell has 8 grandchildren Brian, Wade, Randy, and Brady Warner, Samantha Steffen, Katelyn and Nathan Komarek, and Alexandra and Cole Otto. He also has 2 great-grandsons; Maverick Warner and Jackson Steffen.

Wendell is preceded in death by his parents Wilbur and Mildred as well as his oldest son Wendell Wayne.

Hendrix Pic NewWaKeeney resident Delores Hendrix passed away from cancer October 2, 2015 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney. She was born January 30, 1935, in Trego County to Richard and Hazel (Backstrom) Turner. Delores was 80 years of age.

Delores graduated from Brownell High School and married Wayne Hendrix on June 6, 1954.  Nine years and four children later, they moved to Denver, Colorado, where she remained with her family until 1977, when they packed up the three children still living at home and drove to Alaska.  Delores opened a successful custom drapery business, and later a ceramic shop, where she worked with her daughter for 20 yrs before retiring and returning to WaKeeney in 1999.

She is survived by her sons, Richard of WaKeeney, Robert of Scott City, Keith of Soldotna, Alaska; daughter Carla and husband Charles Tanner of Houston, Alaska; ten grandchildren; and seventeen great grandchildren.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers Delbert Turner and Ronald Turner; and infant sister Eva Joan.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 8, 2015 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of WaKeeney with pastor Randy Gibbs officiating.  Burial will be in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney.

Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in WaKeeney.

Keith was born October 3, 1925 on the Niswonger homestead in Northern Wichita County, Kansas, the son of Emerson Anderson & Stella May (Burruss) Niswonger. A lifetime resident of Western Kansas, he was a farmer and stockman and President of Niswonger & Sons Farm, Inc.

Keith was a member of West Bethany Free Methodist Church in Northern Wichita County, Kansas and Gideon’s International.

On February 4, 1967 he married Barbara Ann Zehm in Kansas City, Kansas.

She was born January 13, 1920 in Quainton, England, the daughter of Frederic and Sara (Rouse) Banham. She married Alvin A. Werth on February 9, 1948 in Schoenchen, Kansas. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1994. She was a homemaker and was employed at Travenol Laboratories in Hays for many years. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Schoenchen.

She loved to knit, do puzzles, square dancing, playing cards, and gardening. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include two sons, John F. Werth and wife Charlene and Gary N. Werth and wife Judy, all of Hays, six grandchildren, Lynne Boettcher, Lance Werth, Holly Dickman, Ryan Werth, Austin Werth, and Adam Werth, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews in the United States and in England.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother Fred Banham, and a sister Ruby Hazel.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church, 206 Church Street, Schoenchen. Burial will follow in the St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday and from 8:30 am until 9:30 on Thursday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. An Altar Society Christian Mothers rosary will be at 6:30 pm followed by a parish vigil service at 7:00, all on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Phillipsburg resident Lynn L. Wallgren passed away Monday, Sept. 28, 2015 at the Smith County Hospital in Smith Center, KS at the age of 67.

He was born December 5, 1947 in Logan, Kansas, the son of Lloyd & Betty (Damewood) Wallgren. Lynn was the owner of Heartland Marketing in Phillipsburg, KS for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Janeen, of Phillipsburg, KS; son, Ty Wallgren, of Kearney, NE; daughter Mandy Wallgren of Hays, KS; two brothers, Rod and Ron Wallgren, both of Hays; and two grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the First St. John Lutheran Church, Kensington, KS, with Pastor Dave Hutson officiating.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

3336537Linda Sue Pelzel, age 67, of Cassville, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2015, at Mercy Hospital, in Rogers, Arkansas.

Ms. Pelzel, daughter of Ezra and Edlee (Valentine) Tittle, was born in Hobart, Oklahoma, on January 2, 1948.

Linda graduated from high school in Liberal, Kansas, and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Major in Sociology and Political Science at Fort Hays State University, in Hays, Kansas. She was employed by the State of Kansas as a social worker for over 30 years. Linda was extremely active in the community, volunteering at the Hays Public Library, Hays Community Assistance Center, Barry County Council on Aging, and various other organizations.

She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hays. In 2010 she relocated to Cassville to be near her sisters and began volunteering for Barry County Council on Aging. Volunteering was a way of life for Linda and she was always thinking of others. Linda loved to read and enjoyed baking.

Survivors include two sons, Len and his wife, Trish Gregg-Pelzel of Olathe, Kansas, Lance and his significant other, Laikynne Smoot, of Mountain Home, Arkansas; one daughter, LeAnne Bennett and her husband James, of Flint, Michigan; two sisters, Marie Reid of Cassville, and Sondra Carson, of Mulberry, Arkansas; and one grandson, Troy Pelzel, of Slidell, Lousianna.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Janice Williams and Gwen Meier.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the White Funeral Home & Crematory, with words of comfort spoken by Laikynne Smoot.

Shirley L. Bruner, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at her home in Dighton, Kansas. She was born on May 26, 1932 in Rush County, Kansas, the daughter of Oren R. And Florence Lewis Howard. She was a resident for over 50 years in Lane County, Kansas and was the owner and operator of Shirley’s Cafe in Healy, Kansas.

She was a member of the Healy United Methodist Church in Healy, Kansas.

On May 3, 1954 she married Howard D. Bruner in Clayton, New Mexico. He passed away on March 16, 1993 in Wichita, Kansas.

Survivors include her One Son – Rickey L. Mastin of Hays, Kansas, One Daughter – LeeAnn Osborn of Dighton, Kansas, Eight Grandchildren, Eighteen Great Grandchildren and Two Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, One Daughter – Rebecca L. Fairchild and One Son – Randy Bruner.

Funeral Services will be held at the Healy United Methodist Church in Healy, Kansas at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 10, 2015 with the Rev. Bud Tuxhorn presiding.

Memorials may be given to the Shirley Bruner Memorial Fund % Price & Sons Funeral Home.

Interment will be in the Healy Cemetery in Healy, Kansas.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday and 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.
