barry-baxter-e1442870418886-210x300SMITH CENTER – Barry J. Baxter, age 49, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE. He was an Adaptive Physical Education instructor for the North Central Kansas Special Educational Cooperative.

Barry was born the son of Jack and Ileta (McCune) Baxter on December 26, 1965 in Plainville, KS.

Survivors include his wife Janeil, son Brock and daughter Jordan of the home; brothers Garry and Lorrie Baxter of Cedar, Kansas; Larry and Norma Baxter of Onaga; sister Karol and Dan Rice of Topeka; sisters-in-law, Jodi and Brett White, Wichita; Jill and Cade Winter, Clifton; mother-in-law, Jackie Votapka, Clifton; eleven nieces and nephews and eleven great nieces and nephews.

Celebration of life services will be held at 11:00AM on Monday September 28, 2015 at the American Lutheran Church with Jim Germer PMA presiding.

There will be a visitation with family present held on Sunday evening from 5:00PM until 8:00PM at the mortuary.

The family has requested memorial contributions be made to Brock and Jordan’s College Education fund and/or the Solomon Valley Larks and can be sent in care of the mortuary.


Donna Mae Rolo

3315062_wlppDonna Mae Rolo, age 80, passed away at her home in Ransom, Kansas on September 21, 2015. She was born on October 12, 1934 in Fairmont, Nebraska the daughter of Ruben and Rose (Ackerman) Sell.

She was a homemaker and cook at the Derrick Inn Restaurant. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ness City and was the #1 Fan of the Kansas City Royals and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. She was baptized at the Hope Reform Church in Sutton, Nebraska where she was later to be married.

On November 17, 1955 she married Wilbur “Willie” Rolo in Sutton, Nebraska. He preceded her in death on February 22, 1975. Donna and Willie moved from Hanston to Ness City in 1972 where they raised their nine children. Donna moved to Ransom in 2014.

Donna is survived by her four sons, Bruce and Jill, Tescott, Gary and his fiancé, Melissa Vrbas, Ness City, Gregory and Sherry, Great Bend, and Rudy and Rhonda, Bazine; five daughters, Sharon Fuhr, Pratt, Shirley Crownover, Hutchinson, Brenda and Chris Krueger, Great Bend, Rose Jones, McCracken, and Debra and Smokey Fairbank, Ransom; her sister, Eleanor Jarrett, Hanston; 24 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; brother, LaVerne Sell; two grandsons, Skyler Jones and Josh Stieben; and a daughter-in-law, Joni Rolo.

The funeral service will be on Saturday, September 26, 2015, 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, Ness City with burial in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Zook, Kansas. Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M. and Friday from 9:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M. with the family present on Friday from 6-8 P.M.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Donna Rolo Memorial Fund.

Connie Lee Entz (McGee)

Connie Lee Entz (McGee) went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 17th 2015 at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville KS while surrounded by her family.

Connie was born 7-28-1943 in Farmington, New Mexico and was adopted at birth by her loving parents, Rodney and Emily McGee. She married Dave Entz and later divorced. She lived single the last years of her life gladly giving her heart to Christ and to her family, especially her grandchildren.

She has been survived by her brother, Fred McGee; children, Tracy and Tammy Entz of Palco, Shaun Vrana (Entz) of Salina, Teresa Entz of Palco, and David Entz of Tempe Arizona; grandchildren, Joshua Entz, Megan Entz, Heaven Vrana, Angelic Vrana, Emily Entz, Heather Entz and Jamie Woods and great grandson, Oliver Jude Entz.

Connie had a passion for genealogy and spent much of her life tracing her family lines far back, collecting names of family ancestors over the past decades. She had a love of the family bond which always remained important to her. She guarded over her family with an unconditional love.

Connie had a strong faith and was actively involved in her church. She was gifted with a servant’s heart and assisted with Kids Corner for many years at the Palco United Methodist Church as well as serving as a Senior Companion for 10 years. Connie loved to cook and hosted many family gatherings in her home over the years.

She is preceded in death by parents, Rodney and Emily McGee; sister, Sharon Graham (McGee; grandson, John Wesley Vrana III; as well as her dear friend, Deborah Randel.

Arden Franklin Johnson

3319013Arden Franklin Johnson was born on February 10, 1921, the third of four sons, to Arthur and Minnie (Eller) Johnson in Rooks County, Kansas, and passed away September 20, 2015 at Homestead Health Center in Wichita, KS at the age of 94.

Arden grew up working on his family’s farm, and graduated from Kirwin High School with the class of 1939.

Arden was united in marriage to Vivian Grace Kincaid in Woodward, OK, on Sept. 10, 1947. They were blessed with three children: Lois Marie, Richard Jarrell and Betty Jean.

Arden and Vivian lived in Glade, KS, for several years before moving to Phillipsburg, KS, in 1956, where Arden worked for Western Power and Gas Company as a lineman. In 1959 they moved to Conway Springs, KS, where Arden became an isolated serviceman for Western Power. Arden was active in the Lion’s Club and the Chamber of Commerce in Conway Springs. He was also a volunteer fireman for the city. Arden was involved in many community events and played the role of Santa Claus several times for the annual Christmas celebration at City Hall. Church played an important part in Arden’s life. As long as his health permitted he sang in the church choir, men’s quartet and at times traveled with his children to perform at area churches.

Arden and Vivian moved to Medicine Lodge, KS, in 1982 where Arden became a substation operator for Centel (formerly Western Power). Arden worked for Centel until he retired in 1987.

Arden and Vivian celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept 10, 1997. Vivian’s health declined over the next several years and Arden became her full time caregiver until her death in 2002. Arden then moved to Wichita, KS, to be closer to his daughter, Lois. He lived independently until his health made it necessary to move to long term care in 2015, where he lived until his death. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

Arden is preceded in death by his parents, wife Vivian, two brothers, Orville and Jarrell. He is survived by his brother Doyle of Glade, KS,; children: Lois Carley and husband Jerry, Wichita, KS, Richard Johnson and wife Kim, Sarasota, FL, Betty Mathewes and husband Charles, Houston, TX; two grandchildren: Brian Johnson and Sarah Mathewes; three great-grandchildren: Cade, Carsyn and Carlie Johnson; and a host of family and friends.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Sept. 28 at 11:30 a.m. in the Marvin Cemetery, Glade with Pastor Forest Cornwell officiating.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Betty E. Gower

Agra resident Betty E. Gower passed away, Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Logan Manor in Logan at the age of 65.

Betty was born April 3, 1950 in Phillipsburg, Kansas the daughter of Ray A. & Norma (Smedley) Gower.

Survivors include her brother, John Gower & wife, Penny of Seal Beach, California; sister, Annette Gower of Springfield, Missouri; and a nephew, Kyle Gower.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, September 28, 2015 at the Heartland Worship Center, Agra, KS, with Pastor Jonathan Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery, Agra.

Miss Gower will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from Noon until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. for visitation at the funeral chapel.

Fidelia - Paper PictureHays, Kansas – Fidelia (Schmidt) Rome, age 95, died Friday, September 25, 2015, at Via Christi Village Hays, Kansas.

She was born June 23, 1920, on the farm at Catharine, Kansas, to Adolph J. and Anna (Staab) Schmidt. She married Wilfred J. Rome on April 23,1940, at Catharine, Kansas. He died December 24, 2010.

She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 9076, St. John’s of Hays Auxiliary and a volunteer at the Hays Community Assistance Center all of Hays. She made noodles and hertzchen “hearts” for many people over the years.

Survivors include three sons, Delmar Rome and wife, Deanna, Russell, KS; James Rome and wife, Lynn, Mentor, KS; William Rome and wife, Marsha, Houston, TX; three daughters, Charlene Petty, Olathe, KS; Kathy Gross and husband, Danny, Hays, KS, Linda Rome, Hays, KS; ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; four brothers, Emery Schmidt and wife, Shirley, Catharine, KS; Adolph Schmidt and wife, DeAnn, Gerald Schmidt and wife, Elaine, Elmer Schmidt and wife, Rosie, all of Hays, KS; two sisters, Cora Dortland, Gorham, KS; Cyrilla Evans and husband, Maynard, Hays, KS; one sister-in-law, Esther Schmidt, Hays, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son-in-law, Paul Petty; three brothers, Alfred “Al” Schmidt, Herbert (Francie) Schmidt, Celestine Schmidt, one infant brother, Elmer Schmidt; one sister, Irene and (Ray) Dinkel.

Hugo O. Luhman

Luhman,Hugocover2ovalHugo O. Luhman, 91 of Natoma, Kansas, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Via Christi Village in Hays, Kansas.

Hugo was born October 25, 1923 in Natoma, Kansas, the son of Carl A. and Emilie (Ahrens) Luhman. He grew up in Natoma and attended school there.

Hugo served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was stationed in Italy, Africa and Europe.

Hugo was united in marriage to Irene Mae Zeigler on September 28, 1947 in Natoma, Kansas. This union was blessed with three daughters, Marjorie, Susan and Cynthia. They made their home in the rural Laton area from 1947 to 1982. Then they moved to the family homestead farm north of Natoma.

Hugo was a farmer and rancher his whole life. He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church, the Natoma American Legion and a life member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. He enjoyed gardening, reading, woodworking, traveling and was said to have watched every Western movie ever made.

Surviving family include his wife of four days short of 68 years, Irene of the home; three daughters, Marjorie Kertz (David) of Riverside, California, Susan Green (Jerry) of Hays, Kansas and Cynthia Elliott of Plainville, Kansas; sisters, Wilma Zeigler of Natoma, Kansas and Norma Horine of Carrollton, Missouri; two grandchildren, Daniel Green (Kinsey) of Hays, Kansas and Steve Elliott (Brook) of Olympia, Washington; and three great grandchildren, Gracie Palmer, Kasdan Green, Maddex Green and Hazel Elliott. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Victor Luhman and sister Esther.

Celebration of Hugo’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma. Burial will follow at the North Lutheran Cemetery north of Natoma. Visitation will be from 9 AM to Service Time on Tuesday at the church. Memorials have been established with Peace Lutheran Church or The Lutheran Hour.

Mark Anthony Alton Moore

Mark Anthony Alton Moore, 28, of Russell, Kansas passed away Friday, September 25, 2015 at the Russell Regional Hospital where he lost his battle with addiction.

Mark was born May 5, 1987 in Overland Park, Kansas, the son of Michael W. Moore and Julia L. Witt. He grew up in the Overland Park area and graduated from Shawnee Mission South in the Class of 2005. He lived most of his life in the Kansas City area before moving to Russell in 2011.

Mark worked in the restaurant and food service industry. He was a manager for Planet Sub and Minsky’s in the Kansas City area and was currently working at Klema’s Apple Market in Russell. He was an active member in the AA Chapter of Hays. He loved listening to music, playing golf, supporting his Nebraska Huskers, Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas City Chiefs and spending time with his niece Lyla.

Surviving family include his mother, Julia Witt of Russell, Kansas; father, Michael Moore (Susan) of Olathe, Kansas; sister, Rachel Mott of Kansas City, Missouri; grandfather, Anthony Witt of Russell, Kansas, grandmother, Betty Moore of Temecula, California; niece Lyla Mott of Kansas City, Missouri; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Gene Moore, his grandmother, Rosanna Witt, and his aunt, Rebecca Witt.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, October 1, 2015 at the St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. 56088ab2765bfClara Rose Kramer, age 93, of Hays passed away Friday, September 25, 2015 at Hays Medical Center. She was born October 4, 1921 on a farmstead west of Hays to Joseph M. and Anna (Seitz) Kramer.

Clara was a farmer and had worked at the Brunswick Café and Ft Hays Drug. She loved farm life and enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and playing cards. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Altar Society.

She is survived by four nephews, Jim Kramer and wife Luanne, Bill Kramer and wife Stephanie and Rob Kramer all of Hays, Joseph Kramer of Wichita and a niece, Laura Garrett of Wichita.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John, Clarence and Edward Kramer and three sisters, Regina, Marie and Eleanor Kramer.

Funeral services will be 10 am Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday 5 pm – 8 pm and Tuesday 9 am – 9:30 am

A parish vigil service will be Monday at 7 pm followed by a daughters of Isabella rosary service.

She was born December 8, 1928 in Atchison, Kansas to Edward and Rose (Gaydusek) Trompeter. She married Valentine Weigel February 17, 1990 in Ellis. He preceded her in death.

Betty was a homemaker and a nurse’s aide at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellis. She had also worked for ten years at the county home in Atchison, KS. She enjoyed bingo, watching baseball, crosswords and she was an avid bingo player. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Ellis.

She is survived by her brother, Bernard Trompeter and wife Linda of Topeka

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Thomas Trompeter and two sisters, Rita Dickerson and Phyllis Smith

Funeral services will be 11 am Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Gathering of family and friends will be Tuesday 10 am until the rosary service at 10:30 all at the church.

Donald A. Taylor, age 70, passed away at his home in Wallace County, Kansas on Friday, September 25, 2015. He was born on December 15, 1944 in Flagler, Colorado, the son Charles Henry and Bertha Elizabeth Beckner Taylor. A resident of Wallace County, Kansas since 2007 moving from Salem, Missouri, he was a Truck Driver and Herdsman on dairy farms.

He was a US Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War from 1962 to 1966 and a member of the Dinas Community Church of Wallace, Kansas, American Legion Post #0336 of Sharon Springs, Kansas, VFW Post #7521 of Tribune, Kansas and was a DAV Member. Donald enjoyed woodworking, coon hunting and spoiling his grandchildren.

On February 11, 1967 he married Margaret N. Cullens in Weskan, Kansas. She survives.

Waunita was born August 29, 1939 in Leoti, Kansas, the daughter of Fred & Lucille (Wilken) Graf. She was a 1956 graduate of Wichita County High School in Leoti, Kansas. She was a Homemaker, Farm Wife, and Librarian and served as a Para at the Wichita County Junior High.

Waunita was a member of the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, was a former Cub Scout Den Mother, and an Aide at Special Olympics across the state.

On July 15, 1956 she married Lloyd E. Gilmore at Leoti, Lloyd passed away on December 14, 2001 in Scott City, Kansas.

Glen F. Staats

Glen F. Staats, age 84, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at his home in Cimarron, Kansas. He was born on May 12, 1931 in Copeland, Kansas, the son of Perry V. And Lula Belle Clements Staats. He was a rancher and farmer in Logan County, Kansas from 1958 until he retired in 1996. A Scott City resident from 2001 to 2011 when he moved to Cimarron, Kansas.

On August 6, 1949 he married Marjy L. Standley in Hutchinson, Kansas. She passed away on October 21, 2010 in Wichita, Kansas.

Survivors include her One Son – Ron Staats of Cimarron, Kansas, One Daughter – Glenda Staats of Kansas City, Missouri, Three Sisters – Elsie Trahern of Cimarron, Kansas, Emma Bateman of Washington State, Neva June Bright of Florala, Alabama, Six Grandchildren and Seven Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, One Son – Danny Staats, Three Brothers, Five Sisters and One Grandson.

Funeral Services will be held at Price & Sons Funeral Home of Scott City, Kansas 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2015 with Steve Payne presiding.

Janice E. Arnberger, 72, of Oakley, died Monday, September 28, 2015 at Salina Regional Health Center. She was born September 2, 1943 in Benton, KS, to Everett and Maxine (Moritz) Nelson. Janice married Francis “Babe” Arnberger on November 30, 1961, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Oakley. She worked for Southwestern Bell for eleven years and at the Oakley Public School for thirty four years. Janice enjoyed playing pitch at the Country Club, sewing and relaxing at Trenton Lake. She loved watching KU basketball and all of her grandchildren’s activities.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents and son Curtis Arnberger.

She is survived by her husband, Babe, Oakley; son, Blake (Kathy) Arnberger, Colby; sister, Gail (Leon) Wegele, Leander, TX and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley, with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m.. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Oakley.

Werner WallaceWerner Wallace, 76, Hays, died Sunday, September 27, 2015, at the Hays Medical Center.

He was born July 8, 1939, in Hamburg, Germany, the son of Gertrude Vollus. He attended elementary school in Germany and graduated from High School in the United States. He then went on to trade school to learn to be a machinist. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he was a Jet Aircraft Servicer. He was a member of the North Oak Community Church, the North Oak Men’s Fraternity, Dr. Martin’s Sunday School Class, the Hays Senior Companions, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

Survivors include a niece, Heidi Larson of Chesterfield, PA and a brother in law, Eric Wellmann of Wayne, PA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Betty Wellmann.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2015, at the North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak Street, Hays. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 honor guard will follow in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney. Visitation will be from 9:30 am until service time on Wednesday at the church.

Thelma Oenita “Jan” Cooper Gantz, age 92, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2015, at Cedar Village, Ness City, Kansas.

Jan was born on May 6, 1923, in New Nata, Arkansas the daughter of W.W. and Leona (Avey) Cooper. In 1950 she moved to Ness City where she met Robert Gantz. They were married on April 9, 1952 in Ness City.

She was a high school English teacher and drama coach, an author, and a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Ness County Bank Building Foundation, both of Ness City.

She is survived by her husband; son, Gary Gantz and his wife Jodi of Ness City; and two daughters, Paula Ripple and her husband, Dr. David, of Dodge City and Ann Matz and her husband, Kurt, of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren, Zachary and Cody Matz, Wade, Colby, and Dalton Gantz, Jacob Ripple, and Shelley Rodriguez and a great granddaughter, Adi.

She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Thurman Cooper and Grady Cooper and her three sisters, Loys Ballard, Genevra Burke, and Malva Sively.

Funeral services will be on Friday, October 2, 2015, 10:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church, Ness City. Burial in the Ness City Cemetery.

Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. and on Thursday from 9:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M. with the family present from 6-8 P.M.

Memorial contributions may be given to the First Baptist Church or the Ness County Bank Building Foundation.

560b06e1e5c98Norene Farmer Smith, age 87, of Ellis, KS passed away Monday, September 28, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis. She was born May 12, 1928 in Gainesville, MO to Arnold H. and Lucy (Shelton) Farmer. She grew up on a farm outside of Gainesville and attended Gainesville High School. She married Doyne P. Smith of Sycamore, MO on July 23, 1946 in Mountain Home, AR. He preceded her in death December 14, 2001.

She was a homemaker and had lived in the Ellis since 1959. She cofounded with her husband Doyne and helped run Triangle Well Service.

She is survived by a son, Rick Smith and wife Sheryl of Buhler, KS; three grandchildren, Tara Goans and husband Lonnie of Buhler, Mindy Fry and husband Andy of Desoto, KS and Brett Smith and wife Julie of Paola, KS; a sister, Geraldine Smith of Rogersville, AR; five great grandchildren, Colton, Alyson and Ty Goans, Mason Fry and Bella Smith as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant granddaughter, Tayllor Paige Goans and a brother, Arnold D. Farmer.

Funeral services will be 10 am Friday, October 2, 2015 at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E 17th Ellis, KS 67637. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ellis.

Visitation will be Thursday 5 pm – 8 pm with family present from 7-8. Friday visitation will be 9 am until service time.

Former Naponee, Neb., resident Doris M. Bradley passed away Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita at the age of 79.

She was born August 18, 1936, the daughter of Loren & Jeannette (Brouliette) Townsend. Her husband, Lyle, preceded her in death.

She is survived by three sons: Wendell, of Atlanta, GA and Damon and Todd, both of Naponee, NE; a daughter, Diana Losey, of Wichita, KS; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Naponee Wesleyan Church, Naponee, NE, with Rev. Scott Randall officiating. Burial will follow in the Germantown Cemetery, Smith County, KS.

Mrs. Bradley will lie in-state on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 5-9 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, KS.
