Foos, Barbara PicBarbara J. Foos, age 84, of Hutchinson (formerly of WaKeeney), passed away Friday, October 23, 2015 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born October 5, 1931, in Wichita, to Jean Walter and Ruth Ann (Schoonover) Connor.

Barbara was a graduate of North High School, in Wichita. On June 11, 1950, she was united in marriage to Carl Dean Tucker in Wichita. To this union, four children were born. She then married Leonard G. Foos on January 30, 1977 in Denver, Colorado. He died November 13, 2011. Barbara worked as a Ward Clerk at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney for many years. She loved to crochet and do crafts. She was known for her talents in the kitchen, both cooking and baking; she loved to bake for friends and family. She enjoyed collecting Precious Moments figurines, and was always looking to expand her collection. Barbara was a member of the Delos Smith Crochet Group. Her loving heart will be missed by many.

Survivors include two sons, Rusty Tucker and wife Cindy of Fort Collins, Colorado, and David Tucker of Wichita; two daughters, Jerri and husband Tom Keffer of Hutchinson, and Terri and husband Dennis Bowman of Hutchinson; four stepsons, Terry Foos and wife Tina of Cascade, Colorado, Mark Foos and wife Susan of Castle Rock, Colorado, Michael Foos of Manitou Springs, Colorado, and Patrick Foos of Las Vegas, Nevada; two stepdaughters, Kathleen Foos of Phippsburg, Colorado, and Janet Foos of Colorado Springs, Colorado; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Jim Connor of Melbourne, Florida; and a sister, Susan and husband Jim Dobis of Hereford, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; grandson, Daniel Weve; and sister, Joanne Barr.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney. Burial will be in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, from 10:00 a.m to 12:00 noon at the funeral home in WaKeeney.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Reno County. Checks made to the organization may be sent to Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th, WaKeeney, KS 67672.

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 7.06.52 AMChester Allen Dinkel, age 54, of Ellis passed away Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Hays Medical Center. He was born March 8, 1961 in Hays, Kansas to Fred and Catherine “Katie” (Flax) Dinkel. He was a 1979 graduate of Ellis High School.

His working career was working various jobs in the oilfields. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Ellis. He enjoyed being a father to his twin daughters, playing horseshoes, pinochle and gardening. He was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed his faithful companion, Shilo.

He is survived by his daughters, Star and Sky Dinkel of Ellis; a step son, Austin Chambers of Hays; five brothers, Harold Dinkel (Carol) of Ellis, Edward Dinkel (Kathy) of Assaria, Henry Dinkel (Janice) of Sharon Springs, Fred Dinkel and Coleen) of Ellis and Steven Dinkel (Laura) of Ellis; six sisters, Virginia Weigel (Charlie) of Eufala, OK, Marilyn Denning (Clarence) of Colby, Helen Fischer (Henry) of Ellis, Vera Haver (Wayne) of Ellis, Bernadette Dinkel of Ellis and Margie Mickelson (Bob) of Ellis. He is also survived by 47 nieces and nephews and 85 great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Mike and Fred Jr. and two sisters, Bernice Dinkel and Kathleen Blake.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday 6 pm – 8 pm at St. Mary’s church with a parish vigil and rosary service at 7 pm.
Visitation Wednesday will be 9 am – 9:30 am at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E 17th Ellis, KS 67637.

Memorials are suggested to the Star and Sky Dinkel Education Fund.

Charles Austin Mann, age 86, died Sunday, October 25, 2015, at Gove County Medical Center, Quinter. He was born June 11, 1929, to Joseph Lynn and Ruth (Feiler) Mann.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Quinter; daughter, Deanna and husband Steve Schwab of Chico, California; son, Dave and wife Roetta of Quinter; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Dianna Sue; brother, Mat; and sister, Jewell.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Quinter Church of the Brethren. Pastors Jay Strunk, Keith Funk, and Stan Copeland will officiate. Private family inurnment will take place at Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Gove County Endowment (for completion of the new Quinter airport), Gove County Medical Center Auxiliary, or the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Quinter. Wayne Morrison Mann

Wayne Mann editedWayne Morrison Mann, age 83, of Quinter, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Gove County Medical Center, Long Term Care Unit, where he had been since October of 2014. He was born July 3, 1932, Southwest of Quinter, the third child of Merlyn and Velma (Wright) Mann.

Wayne was dedicated to the Lord in baptism as a baby. At the age of 13, he felt his need for a savior and asked Jesus to forgive him of his sins, and made a profession of his faith and united with the Reformed Presbyterian Church.

Wayne attended Quinter Schools and graduated with the class of 1950. He attended college for one year in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and received his B.S. in business administration from Fort Hays State College in 1956. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley in 1964. Wayne served his country from 1953 to 1955 in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps, in Ft. Holaburg, Maryland.

Wayne’s life vocation was teaching business classes in high school. He taught in Dighton, Almena, and Ellsworth. After his retirement, he operated the J & W Antique Store in Quinter, in partnership with James Bogert.

Wayne was very much interested in the history of Quinter and Gove County. He was instrumental in establishing the Quinter Museum to which he donated much of his memorabilia.

Wayne is survived by two sisters, Marlene (Laverne) Maxwell of Quinter, and Jean (John) Royalty of Loves Park, Illinois; special friends, James and Gladys Bogert and family of Quinter; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Evelyn; infant brother; and nephew, Larry Maxwell.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 30, 2015 at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter. Burial will be in the Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to service time, Friday, at the funeral home in Quinter.

Smith, Shirley PicShirley Joann Smith, age 81, of WaKeeney, Kansas (formerly of Collyer) passed away Friday, October 23, 2015 at Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital.  She was born on September 5, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Robert and Phyllis (Snow) Regur.

Shirley attended school in Oroville, California.  On September 1, 1951, she was united in marriage to Frank Dalling.  To this union, five children were born.  She then married Charles Smith in May of 1969 in Freemont, California.  He died March 8, 2008.  Shirley owned and operated the Coffee Mug Restaurant in Elko, Nevada for many years until retiring in 2005. After the passing of her husband, Shirley moved to Collyer, Kansas in 2008 with her son, to be closer to her daughter, Donna.  Shirley moved into the Trego County Lemke Memorial Long Term Care in 2012.  She loved her many friends at Long Term Care and enjoyed socializing with the staff and residents.  Shirley had an outgoing personality and always had a quick wit about her.  Shirley liked a little coffee with her creamer.  She enjoyed collecting elephants and coffee mugs.  Shirley will be dearly missed by her friends and family.

Survivors include one daughter, Deann Sabin and husband Fred of Idaho; two sons, Tom Dalling of Collyer, Kansas, and Robert Dalling of Shreveport, Louisiana; ten grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Charles; her daughter, Donna Malsom; her son, Frank Dalling; two brothers, Bobby Regur and Jimmy Regur; and sister, Helen Huss.

Memorial services and burial will be in Elko, Nevada on November 7th, 2015.  Cremation was chosen.

Catherine Stramel - Paper PictureEllis, Kansas-Catherine M. “Cathy” Stramel, age 62, died Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.

She was born February 11, 1953, in Chelmsford Essex, England to Francis Franzicek and Margaret (Maitland) Twardowski. She married Leslie L. Stramel on May 28, 1976, at Lubbock, Texas.  He died August 19, 2004.

She grew up and attended school in Braintree Essex, England and came to the United States in 1976.  She lived a number of years in California and moved to Ellis County in 1996. She attended the catholic church, she enjoyed cooking and her grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Mia Hidalgo and husband, Vinnie, Gypsum, CO; Kelly Leikam and husband, Mike, Henderson, NV; two brothers, Tom and Joe; two sisters, Maria and Frankie; and seven grandchildren, Jared, Teighlar, Jacob, Josh, Cameron, Alexis, Hailey and one deceased grandson, Bryden.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, Ann.

Services are at 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 30, 2015, at Holy Cross Catholic Church Pfeifer,  Kansas.  Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery Pfeifer, Kansas.

A vigil service is at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. Thursday, and from 8:30 to 9:30 A.M. Friday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph of Hays; two sons, Michael Stegman (Marcie) of Washington, KS and Daryl Stegman (Laura) of Spearville, KS; two daughters, Theresa Endsley of Lawrence, KS and Carolyn Mason (Dennis) of Goddard, KS; two brothers, Richard Jones (Joyce) and John Jones (Cindy); four sisters, June Miller, Fern Martin, Jean Warren and Betty Kear (Larry) as well as 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

John Bruntz

John Bruntz, age 88, died at Ness County Hospital, Ness City on Wednesday, October 28, 2015. He was born June 1, 1927 at the farm home southeast of Bazine to Jacob and Eva (Brunz) Bruntz.

He married Eileen Wittig on August 20, 1950 at Alexander. He was a life-long member of the St. Paul Congregational Church, Bazine. He served as a deacon and Sunday-school teacher for many years.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Eldon and wife Lora and Robert Bruntz of Bazine; a grandson, Joel (Melinda) Bruntz of Bazine, a granddaughter, Amy (Adam) DeVault of Derby; great granddaughter, Kerri Bruntz; and three great grandsons, Dylan Bruntz, Kyle and Noah DeVault; brothers, Sam (Esther) of Bazine, Ruben of Watauga, TX; sisters, Viola Daubert of LaCrosse, Dorothy (Harold) Schoenhals of Perryton, TX; and a step-sister, Dorothy Almquist of LaCrosse.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joel Mark; son, Brian Bruntz; a grandson, Kyle Bruntz; brother, Ed; sister, Rose Gumescheimer; and an infant half-sister, Ruby Bruntz.

Services will be held at the St. Paul Congregational Church in Bazine on Saturday, October 31, 2015, 11:00 A.M. with burial in the Bazine Cemetery.

Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Thursday, October 29, 2015 from 1:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. and on Friday from 9:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M. with the family present from 7-9 P.M.

Mattke, Jourdan Pic copyJourdan W. Mattke, age 85, of WaKeeney, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Trego Manor, WaKeeney. He was born January 13, 1930 in Ogallah, to Paull and Gladys May (Pierce) Mattke.

Jourdan was a Trego Community High School graduate. On September 4, 1949, he was united in marriage to Ethel Bell in WaKeeney. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage before her death on August 17, 2005. On November 22, 2008, Jourdan married Wilda Irene Wenthe, in Ogallah. He was an auto mechanic by trade, but was known to be able to fix most anything. He also did business selling oil and gas additives. Jourdan was a fair minded person, who enjoyed the outdoors. He always cherished a good walk or a camping trip. It wasn’t uncommon to find him on the dance floor at family wedding dances and other events. He loved to spend time with family and friends. He will be missed by many.

Those left to mourn his passing include his wife, Wilda; a son, John and wife Kim of Ridgefield, Washington; a daughter, Janet and husband Dave Underhill of Mitchell, Nebraska; two stepsons, Dale Wenthe and wife Julie of McPherson, and Gale Wenthe and wife Brandy of Inman; three stepdaughters, Wanda and husband Duane Pfannenstiel of Frisco, Texas, Sharon and husband Matt Pounds of Yuma, Colorado, and Rebecca and husband John Quincy of McKinney, Texas; four grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; eleven step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and three brothers, James Walter of WaKeeney, Clifford and wife Debra of Independence, Missouri, and Frank and wife Nancy of Wichita. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ethel; and a brother, Leo.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney. Burial will be in the Ogallah Cemetery, Ogallah.

Visitation will be Friday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in WaKeeney.

Former Phillipsburg resident Verda Shields passed away Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015 at the Bethany Home in Lindsborg, KS at the age of 88.

She was born January 14, 1927 in Daykin, NE, the daughter of Walter & Grace (Mumby) Schisow.  Two daughters, Janice and Jane, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sons, Jeff Schweitzer of McCool Junction, NE and Doug Schweitzer of Stevens Point, WI; daughters, Julie Elsasser of Salina, KS and Judy Heiman of McPherson, KS; a sister, Linda Van Meter of Lincoln, NE; 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 2, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the First Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Mrs. Shields will lie in-state on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 5-9 p.m. and again Sunday, Nov. 1, from noon – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. The family will greet friends from 7 – 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Ryan David Bourell

Ryan David Bourell, 37, died Oct. 25, 2015, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born Dec. 31, 1977, in Hutchinson, to Michael and Kathy (Henninger) Bourell.

Ryan graduated from Trinity Jr./Sr. Catholic High School in 1996, then attended Fort Hays State University, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He was the third generation to help operate his family’s business, Bourell Floors Inc., until its closing. Most recently, Ryan was a digital printer for Lowen Corporation. Above all else, he loved his children dearly. He enjoyed golfing, watching his son play football, always looked forward to the father/daughter dance at the annual dance recital, and loved that everyone always celebrated his birthday.

On May 4, 2002, he married Amber Dawn Schmitt in Lenexa. She survives.

Other survivors include: his son, Tripp Bourell; his daughter, Maggie Bourell, both of the home; his father, Mike Bourell; his mother, Kathy Bourell; brothers, Jason Bourell (Brook), Josh Bourell, all of Hutchinson; grandparents, Judy Mason (Bill), Hutchinson, Tom Henninger (Doris), Topeka; father and mother-in-law, Jon and Gwen Schmitt, Wakeeney; brother-in-law, Deric Schmitt (Rocio), Amarillo, Texas; nieces, Mia Bourell, Amiya and Alessandra Schmitt; nephews, Kyler and Lucious Bourell, Colten Schmitt; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Marion and Betty Bourell.

Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, at Elliott Chapel, with Father Nicholas Voelker presiding. The family will greet friends following the rosary from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 612 S. Maple, South Hutchinson, with Father Ned J. Blick presiding.

Grace was born August 5, 1914 on the Fletcher family homestead in the Sunnyside township of northeastern Wichita County, Kansas, the daughter of Glenn Howard & Hattie ( White ) Fletcher. A lifetime resident of Wichita and Greeley Counties, she was a homemaker and held several positions in various businesses in Leoti throughout her career.

Grace was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and was a Charter member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary all of Leoti, Kansas.

On December 31, 1934 she married Gerald D. White at Dighton, Kansas. Gerry passed away on February 28, 1989 in Tribune, Kansas.

Her parents, husband and a brother, Ralph Fletcher precede her in death.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas with the Reverends Brad Kirk and Paul McNall officiating. Inurnment will be in Leoti Cemetery in Leoti, Kansas.

Bernita Catherine Scheuermann, 82, LaCrosse, died Saturday, October 31, 2015 at the Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse.

She was born November 26, 1932 in Topeka Kansas the daughter of Regina Knoll. She was raised by her grandparents Katherine and Michael Knoll in Park, Kansas.

She was a nurses aide at Trego County Hospital, St. Anthony Hospital, and Great Bend Medical Center. On August 7, 1951 she married Leo Dolezal in WaKeeney. She later married Ray Scheuermann on July 4, 1975. He died July 5, 2011. She was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary for many years and loved fishing and animals.

Survivors include a daughter Judy Fike and husband Gary of Topeka, two grandsons Scott Engel and wife Geri of Hays and Bobby Engel of Hays, great grandchildren Logan and Madison Key, a half-sister Pat Clerc and a half brother Michael Grier, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Mike and Mark Dolezal and a half sister Mary Ellen.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, November 2, 2015 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Inurnment will be in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until service time on Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse, in care of the funeral home.
