Longtime Hays attorney, community leader Boone dies at 87

Thomas Clayton Boone, 87, Hays, died Monday, August 25, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born May 8, 1927 in Sharon Springs, Kansas. A seventh-generation United States citizen, his ancestors came here from Germany in 1741. He was the eighth child of John M. Boone and Blanche (Roach) Boone. Tom was the sixth son born to that marriage in a family of 11.

He married Sarah Lillian Floyd and later married Irene (Leiker) Adair. She preceded him in death in 2004.

He has been a licensed attorney in the state of Kansas since February 13, 1956, and has practiced continuously since the day after his admission to the bar in Hays, Kansas. He continued in practice until his death. In addition to his professional career, Mr. Boone served as worker’s compensation examiner on a part time basis for the State of Kansas from 1960 to 1964, was a candidate for Attorney General in 1964, and was the City Commissioner for the City of Hays from 1960 to 1963, serving as Mayor in 1962.

He is a member of the Ellis County Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association and the American Bar Association.  He has been a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Hays, Kansas, was a U.S. Navy Veteran, and a 50 year plus member of the Hays Masonic Lodge 195 of Hays, Kansas.

While in practice in Ellis County he has been a member of the American Quarter Horse Association raising quarter horses and thoroughbred horses on his farm near Munjor, Kansas and participated at various race tracks throughout the United States.  One of his horses Bucket Bailey was a co-owner of the world’s record for 220 yards at Lamesa Park Ranch, Raton, New Mexico.  He and his wife Irene were syndicate members of Easy Six, a champion Stallion owned by the 6666 Ranch of Fort Worth, Texas.

He is survived by a brother Robert Lee Boone of Yuma, Arizona, and two sisters Geraldine Ruth (Pooler) Boone of Yuma, Arizona, Bessie Mae (Beth) Zimmerman of Indianapolis, Indiana, a son, Caleb Boone, daughters, Sarah Rebekah Boone and Rachel Sennett, a grandson William Sennett and two granddaughters, Isabel Yates and Madyson Sennett.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters.  They are: Delaine (Roach) Boone, Mary Amelia (Goers) Boone, Quentin Harvey Boone, William Albert Boone (killed in World War II in February 1942 aboard the U.S.S. Langley), Charles Edward Boone, and John M. Boone, Jr., and Patricia Ann Snare, his half-sister and one grandchild Thomas Stanley Yates the son of Sarah Rebekah Boone.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, Hays.  Inurnment with services by the Hays Masonic Lodge #195 and military honors by the Hays VFW Post No. 9076 will be in the Mt. Allen Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church.

Memorials are suggested in Tom’s memory to William and Madyson Sennett’s educational fund, in care of Emprise Bank of Hays, Kansas.
